Discuss it with HR and/or Hiring manager before you sign the offer letter, make sure it’s in writing that you can have those days off.
Being honest and upfront will reassure them they’ve done right by hiring you.
Me, personally, I’ve always given them a 2 week notice. I can’t make it because of a prior engagement. I’m sorry. Etc.
They might give me some pushback. They might (hopefully not) threaten to fire me or cut my hours. It is what it is. I can’t make it. I ain’t gonna make it. It’s a 2 week notice so if they say no, in my mind, I just resigned.
With that being said, IDK if that comes to mind for them or not because I’ve never had this problem. They’ve given me pushback but I’ve never been fired despite just joining.
The last Job this happened was at a restaurant. I was hired as a cook. I told them when I got hired that I had to take 2 weeks off in May. I already planned the vacation and everything before I got hired. They said ok.
2 weeks prior to the date, I reminded them that I couldn’t be here. I got pushback. They insinuated things. I told them that I told them when I got hired. They were upset. They didn’t say anything. I asked them straight up a couple hours later, so am I good to go on my 2 weeks off or do I have to write a 2 weeks notice. They said I was good.
Honestly tho, I think the HR comment is probably the best option. [+]
I’d say when discussing your start date, after everything is finalized, assuming it’s a normal 1-2 week holiday, not a months long thing. If so, requires discussion earlier
Def tell them you have a prior obligation from December (date) until (date) that can’t be changed you’ll need to be off for. They don’t need to know it’s your mom.
If there’s an issue with that, then determine how badly you want the gig or the mom visit.
