Ask them to explain their interests to you and go from there. You might not be interested but pretty much anyone would be happy to explain their passion to you, and it will open the door for more conversation. Alternatively you can start the conversation with something broad and generalised in spectrum that most would know or would be interested in, ‘hey did you see the new movie that’s just come out yet?’ Regardless of their answer you can continue the conversation and befriend them. Everyone likes movies.
What they are interested in (research into) and encourage them into your hobbies and interests (ask questions) goes both ways so that they can par take in your hobbies/ interests.
