Hi all! My dad is a difficult man to buy for. Most typical ‘dad’ gifts are of no interest to him (no alcohol, tools, watches, the list goes on).

I can’t buy the poor man anymore t-shirts or mugs.

So, I’m thinking of invoking some nostalgia, like finding sweets that aren’t really sold anymore.
He was born early 70s and grew up North West. Was really into bands like Rush (he has vinyls) and is not into ‘tat’.

Would really appreciate any ideas from this sub (for under £50) or suggestions for what to search for!

  1. I’m 54 and to be honest most nostalgic gifts are usually a let down and disappointing. Get him something fun like a remote controlled helicopter, think along the lines of what you’d buy a fourteen year old – something teccy and fun that he wouldn’t buy himself.

  2. Could do an ‘experience’ gift and turn the leccy off to evoke the nostalgia of the 3 day week?

Serious suggestion, could you get him tickets to a music event to go with him to? Either a tribute band or newer band in a style you think he might enjoy?

  3. Get him a smart speaker and a subscription to planet rock premium. There are loads of channels (including the Prog-Rock channel that has loads of Rush).

  4. How about a retro print of some sort for the wall, like a scene from a late 70s/80s film he said he liked as a kid (my husband is 51 and loves star wars and Ferris Bueller for example), an album cover, or a nice view of his hometown, somewhere like a park or woods that wouldn’t have changed much over the years. Or if you can find a pic of xxx town centre in 1975 sort of thing.

  5. Old skool gamer ? Treat him to either a Sega Megadrive mini or Nintendo mini console (there are others to consider & might have to stretch the budget) so he can relive the classic gaming days again. My son got me one a while ago and it was a pleasant surprise from the normal Dad gifts.

  6. Maybe just me but if my kid took me out for a meal just me and them I’d love that

  7. Airfix 1/24 scale model aeroplane. I had the Hurricane, but was too young to appreciate building it. My older cousin’s boyfriend helped me. They were a typical 70s thing that some preteen boys longed for. Other ideas may be the original Techincal Lego car chassis or a Meccano set, but those may be out of the £50 range.
