Please explain if this is a social rule and if so, why. I would be so grateful!
So as a married woman, am I allowed to have male friends? My spouse and I are not jealous or controlling people. We do not care. Society— at least where we live— seems to care. Am I an idiot for thinking it shouldn’t matter?

Yes. If you can’t trust your partner you need a new partner.
You must live in a super conservative (read repressive and sexist) community.
I’m a female and only have one female friend, who’s married. I also used to be married. All of the rest of our friends are dudes. Our friend group has been together for 5 years and there’s never been an issue. The people giving you guff are probably doing so out of their own insecurities. You’re not alone and you’re not doing anything wrong.
