I have a friend who doesn’t have a source of income. He has a girlfriend who gets a disability check and both of them live off it. I make a decent amount of cash. So almost every conversation this guy tells me that he’s not materialistic– essentially implying that I am, because I wear nice clothes and have a car. Regardless, this guy is always asking for a ride and trying to bum money.

Dude is a textbook narcissist. Rewrites history to make a point. I don’t give him money, but he constantly tries to bum it, indirectly. I could write a TV show based on this guy.
Probably because I’m not a jealous narcissist. Or, probably because I’m up late and something was on my mind. Not sure.
Sounds like your friend needs to find a job.
Well, if I were you I would call him out on it – but that depends on how important this behavior is to me compared to how important his friendship is to me overall.
