I am looking at my blood results and see “Serum globulin” in my blood results just next to “Serum albumin”. I was going to calculate my free T. but maybe SHBG needs to be ordered separately?

Thanks

  1. I found a website, actually I found 700 or so which tell you what SHBG is and how it is not the standard serum globulin blood test, so you can easily compare the two terms. Good news if they are both normal, your liver and immune system are probably working OK.

Serum globulin and albumin are parts of a standard blood panel. You appear to be trying to figure out something related to sex hormones, which is desired by men either thinking they need testosterone supplements or are planning to or are using steroids for muscle building.

A GP can order tests for low testosterone levels where sexual performance is a concern, and where it’s feasible it could be the cause, but would not be likely to assist if the test is for the other reason.

  2. No. Globulins and albumins are groups of proteins, these would have been measured as part of a liver function test.

Sex hormone binding globulin is just one type of globulin so you cant infer its level without measuring it directly.
