I have never liked driving and prefer to walk or take public transport if I have the option. I do have a car, and I am the only person in my friend group who has one. The only reason I have it is because I have a field IT job that requires travel during the day. So on my days off, I’ve really had enough of being in a car. My friends often say that I shouldn’t take a bus to meet up with them because “I am the one with a car”. The dealer I bought it from never said that was what I signed up for!

  1. You don’t owe people anything, no. This is a tricky one socially because the challenge is explaining that to people who feel entitled in a sense, or have a different perception of that in the context of a friend group than you do.

  2. Have you tried giving them the same explanation you’ve given us? “I have to spend a lot of time in the car for work and I just prefer taking a break from it when I have down time” is reasonable and understandable.

  3. my advice start with a joking “gas, grass, or ass” i.e. they are expected to contribute if they want the privilege of a ride/ designated driver. and to be clear you should in no way feel like you have to bring your car to anything you don’t want to.

  4. People add to your title as they get to know you. Friend, with car, with pool, with beach cabin, with tools, with drugs, etc.. sometimes it’s hard to know who your real friends are and who just finds you convenient for what you have that they want. Just say what you told us. I don’t like to drive and I like the bus.
