Possibly they were trying to outbid the other buyer, increasing their.l bid each time. Eventually deciding to give up once it got to £41.
He didn’t.
He put a bid of £40 on. Others don’t know this – so every time they put a bid on, it was lower than his bid, so his bid wins.
His bid only loses as his maximum was £40, and the winning bid was higher.
eBay automatically increases his bid.
He puts in the max he will go to, but eBay only records this at slightly above prev high bid. If someone outbids that, but still below the max bid, eBay keeps him in play with a slightly higher automatic increase
