I never have the feeling or need of giving people gifts or presents in important dates, for example birthdays, Christmas, mother’s day etc…

I genuinely feel bad when people give me gifts for my birthday and I know I didn’t give them anything.

How can I grow/ improve to start wanting to give people gifts? I want it to feel natural and not rely on others giving me stuff for me to give them something back.

  1. First things first, there is no such concept of “wanting to give someone a gift”. If you receive a gift from someone, you ought to give them something back when it’s their birthday etc.

I like to think of gifting as a form of reciprocating someone’s time and energy.

For example, someone who attends your birthday party isn’t doing so out of compulsion, but only out of respect and value for the bond you share. Giving a gift to the same person, on their birthday shows the exact same thing, and if it’s a meaningful gift, it’s even better.

About the “feeling natural” part, just wish them and give them the gift. If your culture allows for hugs, give them a hug after wishing them.
