Just a had a recruiter got back to me, saying that I’m short listed and wants me to send a proof of identity (passport) and right to work.

I’m aware it’s absolutely reasonable for the employers to ask for proof of identity, but I’m not too sure about recruiters.

  1. I’ve known it to happen because certain employers want the recruiter to pre-filter for right-to-work. I would go ahead with it and not worry too much.

    > I don’t want my

    Me neither!

  2. Yes, I have had this from several recruiters so we don’t have to meet up face to face. They wanted a quick chat with me on teams holding a passport up by my face. Perfectly normal.

  3. If an agency is representing you then they have a duty under right to work rules to prove that you have eligibility to work in the UK. Nothing to worry about

  4. Also from a visa perspective, not all firms can sponsor a skilled worker visa so they might want to check on your right to work (how long do you have, will they have to apply one for you, can they do that etc.) Because if in the end they can’t take you on for long-term or at all it will be a waste of time in recruitment for both you and them.

  5. Most good agencies will complete full background screening on candidates so everything from right to work, proof of address, work references, even credit and criminal checks.
This is normal, what is the basis of your reluctance?

  6. Of course, employers pay recruiter to cover off things like right to work checks so there are bumps in the road down the line.

  7. It’s part of the service they offer to the companies, they do all the checks so the people they send can just start working, some of the jobs they have will only be temporary cover so it would be a pain to send someone who then has to spend the first few hours of their shift filling forms and doing HR stuff.

    Completely normal.

  8. The recruiters are operating on behalf of employers so yes they have to right to ask said questions

  9. Unless you are meeting them in person in which case you will need to take a passport or driving license

  10. I have literally never had a recruiter ask me for that, and I have spoken to many recruiters. These are all reputable companies for relatively high paying roles too. My name is also foreign.

Surprised at how many who commented have been asked for that information.
