Hi all, I am currently living in a small flatshare and we’ve just had our final roommate move in which means I cannot use their room as a clothes drying room anymore. There is no more space in the house, so as a result I need to use my own small-ish double room now.

Typically I have 1.5 drying racks of clothes to dry ([screenshot](https://imgur.com/a/hkRnJ4H) representation of the racks). I also cannot open my window much due to loud traffic and my door is mostly closed due to roommates.

Therefore I was wondering, if I were to get [this](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pro-Breeze-Dehumidifier-Humidity-Continuous/dp/B073XNK45P/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=clothes+dehumidifier&qid=1667310128&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI1LjE4IiwicXNhIjoiNC4zOSIsInFzcCI6IjMuMTgifQ%3D%3D&refinements=p_76%3A419158031&refresh=1&rnid=419157031&rps=1&sprefix=clothes+dehu%2Caps%2C89&sr=8-3) type of dehumidifer and placed it next to the two racks inside my small double room (with the windows and door unable to be opened), would this setup adequately keep my room from becoming too humid/stuffy/smelly due to the amount of clothes drying? And would it dry the clothes in a reasonable amount of time to avoid mold? Does anyone have any estimates as to how long they would take to dry?

  1. I had a similar set up to you, but in the end I bought a [heated clothes dryer](https://assets.onbuy.com/i1/product/ad33fe73251247e380d71a83092b6a59-m10493286/cover-for-drysoon-mini-standard-3-tier-heated-airer-dry-clothes-even-faster.jpg) instead. It was about the same price of the dehumidifier. It has a cover to keep in the heat so it dries quicker (i even stuck a cheap dehumidifier inside during winter when it’s too cold to open windows), it also doubles up as a heater as well, which is handy for the winter.

  2. Save your money and open the window during the day. If your bedroom door is shut the noise shouldn’t be terrible elsewhere in the flat. This is assuming you go out to work not wfh, would still work if wfh though just limits your days.

Even with a dehumidifier running your room will get kinda stale if the windows aren’t opened periodically. Plus they’re not that quiet so the road noise bit might not even matter.

Do you have a revolution laundry thing near you? Can fit so much in one of their tumble driers

  3. It’s ok. Consider also a desk or tower fan to move the air around the clothes as well as the dehumidifier

  4. Yes, that should work. I have a similar arrangement in my utility room. I would expect your clothes to dry in 24 hours max, less if they’re thin and well spaced out on the rack

  5. Clothes that are nearest to the dehumidifier will dry in a couple of hours, the rest will take a day. You could rotate them round to speed it up. I don’t get any condensation or damp in my room with this setup.

  6. Have you looked at buying a second hand tumble drier? It’s been years since I was in houseshares, but we put £5 each in and bought a s/h condenser dryer off Gumtree. From an energy perspective it’s not going to be too much more than running a dehumidifier all day, and if you can find a heat pump one it’ll likely to be less.

  7. I suggest you reduce your washing loads so as to only need a single rack

And since you are a dehumidifier noob (as am I) I suggest you get one like [this](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/364018275689?hash=item54c12e1569%3Ag%3AZQIAAOSwv3JjTPsg&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4JNlf%2FEGvwuWvuerkDXRx%2BxssuOJelLZriY80DocL9md98ByxQLFiOVEkp3QFpioSYGykqlCw5FjlVuvfJpAp3SZ%2FLE0W1hld3gxRz20PvFsjSIbifgVrhLOn1b3iCwJZnPFJV3OB4GZ4%2BmmsiVCmRQK1Np2ZZ5k%2F5nvuec%2Bi2InrzxtIFz1gzdI5clprQLzxWimMVrZc7%2Bj5Th1ktyXlnfL%2FigpDkjIyfH1JRfopHMNkgx1OiCrQ9U9BmnAvzsQt6ew56B4rW89DysjUX%2BSHBuRW2z05ANPWhwXNy3vU5Ij%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_r5r8uGYQ&LH_BIN=1) on ebay for 105 quid (sure you can spend 130 quid for it on amazon if thats what floats yer boat)
I bought it a few days ago when amazon were offering it for a bit less than 100 quid, and it has sat below my washing for the last 8 hours and I am well pleased

Two racks of washing in a smallish room is an unenviable position to be in

Be aware that when dehumidifiers tell you they are “quiet”, that they are lying. My one states it is 36db which is quite a racket if you’re stuck in the same room with it. So factor db ratings into your research also

But still – I reckon the other recs here are worse, and will make your room damp
