You’re A and your friend B comes to you looking like they’re angry or sad or even happy about something, looking like they need a supportive friend to talk to. The conversation goes like this:

A: “Hey, you look \[emotion\], what’s up/do you want to talk about it?”

B: “Well \[event happened\] and I feel \[emotion\] about it because \[reason\]”

A: “That sounds \[adjective\]”

But then what? I don’t know how to continue that conversation.

  1. I would try to follow up with, do you want help fixing the issue or do you just need someone to listen? This helps define your role in the conversation.
