19 male here just done MY CBT and looking to get a 125cc moped and I’m getting quotes for 1.7-2.2k for third party insurance. Is there anything easy that I can do to lower it like taking another course or putting certain indicators to make it cheaper as this is alot for a bike that’s not even worth that much thanks in advance

  1. That must be wrong?

Ny first year on my vespa GT 125 was £120 – admittedly I was 22 at the time..

  2. 3rd party fire and theft is what I found was the the cheapest that was about 6-8 years ago for a 125 and it had to be under £500 for the year I was about 18

  3. Try the other types of insurance. Comprehensive or TP, fire & theft *might* be cheaper.

Try a different model of bike. I found the sportier Lexmoto bikes were more expensive to insure than street/naked ones despite having the same engine and performance.

Where will the bike be stored? Garage, street or in a locked garden? What sort of security will it have? You might get a slight reduction if you agree to use a Sold Secure lock whenever it’s parked.

What did you put for occupation, postcode area and other personal details? Some combinations are more likely to claim and have a higher premium. I had to pay an extra £50 plus admin charges when I moved to a different part of Leeds.

At 19 you can get a full A2 licence. It’d hard to say if that will make things more or less expensive (better trained vs likely to ride a more powerful bike).

There are lots of different factors that can affect the premium. Try going on a comparison site and seeing what makes a difference. Once you start to build up an NCB it should come down quite a bit.

  4. Don’t lie. But you perhaps need to find a more secure place to store it. Garage is best. But obviously, you might not have a garage available and renting one might cost you more than the insurance?

Do you know anyone who is older and had a licence for a while who you could add to the insurance? People add their parents to the car insurance and it works. But obviously you need to find a friend or relative that has an appropriate licence.
