I recently met a guy that I really like. We’ve only gone on a few dates so far, but I am wondering how much time I should reasonably I expect from him since he just started a medical fellowship. I can’t tell if he is just really busy, or if he is not super interested in me and maybe dating other people?

  1. I’ll help with this one since I come from a family of doctors(I went rogue out of 4 children to the finance route).

He’s probably busy. Depending on the program he’s in, he’s busy and will probably ramp up. A fellowship is an advanced residency: they’re working and also still studying. A typical resident could work anywhere from 60 to 80hrs a week. Add studying and prepping for exams and clinicals and it makes it harder.

Again, not sure what program or field he’s in. Siblings were in the -ology programs and one was in a long distance thing with their significant other at the time. The SO did most of the visiting because any free time, they spent it catching up on sleep.

So, expect that he’ll be busy. Expect that you’ll have to stick it through if you like them. And in 2-3 years, it’ll all end. At the same time, trust me, if you can put up with the hours and stress of those 2-3 years, you all should be fine.

Edit to add: communication should be a huge part of this. And support.

  2. I’m a doctor who finished residency. I can guarantee you that he is indeed busy and probably does not have the time to talk to multiple girls.
