I’m recovering from an eating disorder and am going on a date to get sushi. I have no idea what a normal sushi order is. Last time I went with a friend, I got 1 roll which I thought was a normal amount. (1 roll = 1 serving, right…?) My friend gave me a weird look and said awkwardly “You really didn’t order much…”

I’m trying to avoid that, so this is my stupid question: How much am I supposed to order?

Update: Thanks everyone! Date went great, ordered a normal amount of sushi.

  1. Don’t worry about what is “normal”. There is no normal, order to be healthy. If you find you aren’t very hungry, maybe offer something new to try with your meal. Everyone has stiffen size appitites for differnt kinds off meals. If you find your self streesed out order something for fun or maybe even sides since they are smaller portion. The salads are really great too. Continue on your health journey, the only opinion that matters is you and your body and if you have any professionals that help. Good luck on your journey!

  2. I think for lunch you’d want about 8 pieces of sushi. For dinner maybe a little more. But if you have the option, choose different ones to try different flavours to see what you like. Japanese food is very tasty

  3. The menu may give you more hints by telling you what they’re offering, but usually when you order a roll (nigiri) you get a few small pieces cut from a roll, while ordering the cut protein laid over rice (maki) often gets you a pair.

The sushi restaurant near me will offer a regular-sized sushi “meal” that’s basically an order of nigiri plus four maki, or if you’re hungry, want to try more different things, or just wave around some money you can order larger size meals or a la carte, but that gives you a sense of a meal. Oftentimes it’s a good idea to order several different things just to try the tastes, and sushi isn’t particularly heavy or filling. If you’re out with friends or a date ordering a bit more than you might eat on your own gives you a chance to try a few more things — pairs of maki let you share. Think of it as “let’s pick some different flavours we want to try” instead of “let’s get enough to eat.”

There are also some giant rolls that are much bigger than traditional rolls that are meant to be more filling and to have more flavours in one bite. These will be more expensive than “sushi roll with cucumber” and will have several different ingredients listed inside. One of these is often a meal on its own, but getting some maki alongside would still be a good idea, again, to explore different flavours.

So what? Eat as much as you want.
