12th of November, or 19th November?

  1. I’m not leaving that up to chance. I’m specifically asking them what day they want to go out.

  2. If I said it myself I’d mean the 19th. But I wouldn’t say it normally because it’s ambiguous.

If someone said it to me, I would ask them to clarify!

  3. Depends when they ask. If they asked on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, I’d assume they meant the very next day that was a Saturday. If they asked on Thursday or Friday, I’d tend to assume they meant in 9 or 8 days’ time, and would ask for clarification. Actually, I’d ask for clarification in all cases.

  4. I would guess the 19th but not count on it and would always ask whether they mean “the Saturday coming, or the one after?”

  5. Next Saturday is the 19th, to contrast with “This Saturday” the 12th.

    But, you should always clarify

  6. I would understand 12th as next Saturday.
But maybe it’s because English is not my first language and that would be how I would say it.

Yes, it has caused some fiascos

  7. In this thread, 200 people say the exact same thing instead of just upvoting the guy who said what they were going to say themselves.

“19th, 12th would be this Saturday. You should still clarify though”

  8. I would go with the majority ( it’s the 19th ) but I usually say: THIS Saturday (12th ) or a WEEK ON Saturday (19th ) to be clear.

  9. I always ask which date. Because THE next Saturday is this one. But NEXT Saturday isn’t this one, it’s the next one.

  10. I would clarify. Some of this depends on the emphasis, if they say “are you free *next* Saturday” it certainly suggests skipping this coming Saturday. If it is said more casually it could really mean either. More likely 19th I’d say, but I’d want to be sure.

  11. I’d assume the following week but ask to be sure. If it was Monday next Saturday would be the 12th to me.

  12. Growing up in South London, I would have said next Saturday is the 12th. Now I’ve moved more north, next Saturday is the 19th. Many arguments with the gf over this, as I used to say ‘When is the NEXT Saturday you find yourself waking up on?’.

Didn’t wash. Now I just accept that ‘Saturday week’ isn’t an expression here!

  13. The 12th, as that is the next Saturday, if it’s the 19th, they mean a week on Saturday
