This “nothing in common” idea is a little mind-blowing to me. We share a good 90 percent of our common humanity. If you’re speaking the same language you can find something to connect on.
If the internet gives you cheesy questions, why not ask something you’re curious about?
Ask them about their interests. A few years ago I had a long conversation with a woman about her hiking hobby. How her and her daughers would do it frequently, and other aspects that go into the hobby. I have zero interest in hiking and am an indoor nerd. But just asking curious questions to learn more is my go to.
