Mid 20s and mine is finally starting to show its patchy ass self

  1. First there are shampoos and conditions made for your beard. Also get a wood comb, a rough and fine brush. Also find a wax or oil that you like or more specifically a scent that your wife likes for added benefit.

  2. Wash it regularly. There are beard shampoos and conditioners, but I can’t use them unfortunately. But my skin has a particular problem that most people don’t have.

I use a regular beard trimmer set at the right length, then I clean up with the bare metal. That said, it’s worth paying a barber to do it from time to time.

Get an oil at the very least. I use a beard serum, but again, my skin has different requirements. A beard oil is more than sufficient for most men. Consider a beard balm for the winter when it’s dry out.

A wood comb is nice, too.

  3. I don’t know if barber shops are your thing/you have a favorite place already – but when I decided I was gonna fix my beard I went to a pretty good barbershop (that does beards) and just asked the barber what he thinks would look good. He then gave me a cut and I now maintain it myself mostly following what he did that one time.

On top of that keep good hygiene – I use a brush and a comb to keep it looking decently clean and not messy, along with beard oil after shower/before combing and beard wash in the shower.

In terms of which brands to use it’s mostly up to personal preference for scents and price. I used to use King C Gillette’s stuff which is cheaper and pretty commonplace afaik, and now I use Proraso Wood & Spice which I love (and so does my gf).

  4. I wouldn’t mind knowing more also, first time I’ve grown a beard, about 10 months in, trimmed by a barber twice, once for a wedding, once for a funeral.

I use a beard oil after a shower to get moisture on the skin under the beard, or else it’ll flake.

Now & then I’ll put a beard balm in for texture, like wax in hair.

In the shower I use a beard shampoo, apparently don’t use normal shampoo because it can strip the beard of its natural & good oils.

But having never grown a beard before, I’m finding the moustache is slower than the beard, also get to a certain length & the beard slows right down as well.

Don’t use a comb, it’ll pull hairs out easily, I use a boar’s hair brush.

  5. I’m super lazy with mine and just shampoo it with my hair. If I’m going to a wedding or something I’ll go to a barber and put some oil in it.

  6. Trim around your mouth. No, more than that.

After a 4 week wilderness experience, I had my first beard at age 35. I trimmed it to a goatee. A woman I know saw me just before I was going to shave it all off. She told me to keep it. She offered to trim it for me, and told me how it would be for kissing the way she trimmed it.

Make sure there is no hair on the lips, and then trim a little more.

No, I did not kiss her. She is married. She did introduce me to her sister after the beard trim. Yes, I dated he sister.

  7. I keep it thicker in the winter so for maintenance I just rub a little coconut oil on it when it feels dry. Usually once a week. I rinse it when I shower that’s about it.

For trimming I use an electric beard trimmer quick and easy. Once or twice a week takes maybe 2 mins each time.

I would also point out you don’t need fancy beard shampoos and conditioners or waxes. They are overpriced and for me have either made me break out or dried my skin out really bad. Just using a good extra virgin coconut oil is light years better and cheaper. Also if you want to smell nice you can add whatever essential oils you like to the coconut oil and your beard will smell like that.

  8. 6 year growth for the beard. Never trimmed or sculpted, no maintenance outside of whatever the old lady is buying for shampoo and conditioner this month. Looks fantastic!

  9. First off find someone who annoys you that tells you to shave at least once a week, beard grows 10x faster during those circumstances.

When you have a beard you trim it with a Panasonic ER-PA10 and use specialized shampoos and conditioners + beard-oil.

(I have a 35cm beard because my mom skyped me during the pandemic and kept whining *every single time*)

  10. I guess I’m lucky.

I really just let it grow and I find it to be scruffy but everyone tells me how nice it is and it suits me.

I’ve never styled my beard or even trimmed it. I’ll shave it off every now and then but I just let it grow and everyone tells me they like it. I’m the only one who doesn’t.

  11. I wash mine daily the same time I wash my hair with the same stuff.

The trimming is easy. I keep it out of my mouth mainly. I go to the barber about once a month, and I hack it up to get the length close to where I want it before I go. He makes it look good.

Very trouble free and low maintenance.

  12. I wash it with shampoo then comb it daily, and pluck any unruly hairs. I periodically apply beard oil. The woman who cuts my hair trims it & lines it up.
