I think it’s all depending on your social/political views. Though I don’t think overall his popularity really changed that much, just different people being vocal about it.
Before there were bunch of fanboys that worshiped the ground he walked on. But most people (myself includeded) didn’t really care. Thought he was just some rich tech business peraon, no big deal. But then when he started walking more political/social issues a good number of the ppl who didn’t care , all of a sudden started to care and by virtue of our social media culture, became very vocal about it. Kind of the polar opposite of the fanboys, but equally as bad. They now hate everything about him cause he is going to destroy the free world, etc, etc .
To me he is just some eccentric billionaire, not a savior of mankind but also not some crazy evil person.
I think the downturn started when he did the “pedo man” stunt. At that point, he was still respected, but not really revered anymore.
Then, covid happened. He made a lot of empty promises and pushed for reopening factories during a pandemic and was basically a covid Karen. At that point, he was seen as just another billionaire, but still had some weird stans who still thought he was going to take humanity to Mars.
Then, this year, it came out how sleazy the guy actually is. He “switched parties” to provide cover for exposing himself on a private jet, he was involved in that Johnny Depp/Amber Heard incident, and he was a top emitter for private jets.
He has a history of over-promising and under-delivering (Hyperloop, anyone?) and his reputation caught up to him, hence why nobody wanted him to buy Twitter, though people would have been excited for this years ago. His reputation has caught up to his mediocrity.
Well, he still has high approval ratings with the american public, last I checked.
As for why there’s so much hate, I think it’s mostly tall poppy syndrome. If electric cars were as expensive, weak, and unprofitable as they were in the 2000s, and if Tesla were not a successful company, he’d get a better reception from the internet.
Most people think he was a dickhead during the cave rescue. People on what passes for the left in the US typically also dislike him for being politically incorrect.
