My fiancé and I have decided to spend 3 days/nights in December in the Lake District. We’re probably not going to do much hiking, but want to enjoy the views, enjoy the restaurants/pubs, and stay at a nice romantic hotel.

Any suggestions, especially related to the hotel? I guess we’d stay at/around Bowness-on-Windermere.

We would be taking buses, Ubers (if available), and walking.

  1. Bowness, Ambleside or Windermere are your best places if using public transport.

There is also Kendal and Keswick, both of which are also beautiful.

  2. We stayed at Keswick and although it isn’t the easiest to get to we really enjoyed it, lovely little town with beautiful views.

  3. Is it possible to travel their just by public transport?

I have always wanted to visit but don’t drive.

  4. Ambleside or Keswick are the main towns with lots of pubs / restaurants etc. plus Windermere, but that’s a bit touristy. Ambleside is more central and will give you easy access to the central lakes and fells.

  5. Ambleside is really lovely, Bowness is nice but I’d say more to do in Ambleside. I don’t know if it runs in winter, but you can stay in one town, and take a boat trip to visit the other towns on the lake.

  6. I have stayed at The Gateway Inn in Kendal and it is a lovely hotel/restaurant. It is about 10 minute drive to Windermere or Ambleside which have lots of pubs and restaurants etc.

  7. Bowness is nice. Not too big, nice restaurants, and it’s a hub for all the Windermere boat trips.

  8. Ambleside is a safe bet. Lots of shops and places to eat. Great hub for walking and regular buses to other towns. Has a lovely cinema too.

  9. We just got back from the Lake District and it was WET. But we still had a lovely time. We stayed near Bowness-on-Windermere which was nice but as people say, there’s a bit more to do in Ambleside and Keswick. Ambleside has a good balance of attractions and location, as you’re a bit more central.

  10. Hi, me and my wife stayed in a lovely romantic hotel in Ambleside called Rothay manor. Easy walk into town and lots to see and do around with a good bus connection

  11. A lot of Ambleside/Windermere here but (North lakes bias warning) Keswick has much better views without travelling. Though I really couldn’t comment on the town side of things.

  12. We’ve been to Keswick in winter and it was nice. Not sure about the public transport though.

  13. If you’re in bowness, check out the royalty cinema. 1930s cinema, wurlitzer and all! Very nice place.
