I (f) was at a really low point in my life – I still can’t believe I did this but I saw a girl who was wearing something from a game I play. I just asked her if she would want to play together and she said yes – best friends now and she has helped me branch out to other social groups.
I think a lot of people probably want friends too but are just as scared to start that conversation as you are.
The worst that can happen is they say no, but you still feel proud of yourself for trying.
Make honesty one of, if not, the most important value in your life. It’ll weed out the people that will not be important to you in the long run, but it’ll make the important ones stay.
I’m not saying be blunt or tactless. Always practice courtesy and respect. But never lie to get approval or to impress anyone.
Honesty has helped me with insecurity and shyness. It will help you improve your circle of friends.
If you have a climbing gym close by I recommend joining one. Very fun activity, you get in shape and there are plenty of people to just start chats with as you work on climbs together. Obviously this is under the assumption that you’ll enjoy climbing.
But ultimately for me it came down to having hobbies that I enjoy and can do alone. The more I invested in having fun on my own I found that people naturally were more likely to randomly start a conversation with me and this has only increase the more I improved. I walk around with my camera to do street photography and people will take interest.
These random interactions have allowed me to develop social skills.
Another thing you can do is just make small talk with strangers. I usually have a small conversation with people working the register and that’s just helped with my communication. It obviously won’t really lead to deep connections but hey being able to hold a conversation with anyone is important.
