How do I negotiate pay for a job offer? I really want to work there but the pay isn’t enough for me to live off. It feels really awkward asking for more money when they already said what they pay—and what if they tell me to get lost or if asking for more money is rude??

  1. Asking for more pay compensation is not rude. It’s business.

Assuming your pay is salaried, not hourly, employers typically do not offer jobs to new hires with salaries at the top end of the pay scale. It is more at the bottom to lower middle range so there is room for negotiation. If they really want you, they will consider the counter offer and adjust the offer.
