Men of reddit, who is your inspiration and how did it/him/her inspired you to become a better you?

1. I feel like I have a lot. I try to learn something from everybody that I get to know a lot about. I don’t think Tarantino is a great guy, but his success story and his passion for filmmaking was a huge boost to me. I think David Fincher’s pursuit of perfection is a big inspiration for me. I think Robert Eggers (director the VVitch, the Lighthouse, and the Northman) has immense humility for someone who’s knocked all 3 of his projects out of the park so far, which is something that I strive to emulate.

   I guess my biggest inspiration would be Jake Gyllenhaal. No matter film he stars in, he always gives his best performance. He finds the good things in a project to praise. He has a lot of confidence, but he never comes off as a douche. I think his performance in Donnie Darko was something that I saw at the perfect time, because according to Gyllenhaal, he was feeling very lost in his life at that point, which mirrors the character. When I saw the film, I felt very purposeless, and despite the sort of depressing nature of the film, it really made me feel like I had found my purpose with filmmaking, despite the uncertain road ahead.

2. Got married 8 years to her. She inspired me by being lazy. So I learned to cook and clean. I got two jobs to support us.

   She had splurged all I earned. So she inspired me to budget.

   She was disrespectful, did many things behind my back, didn’t care for my say in things. So she inspired me to go out for a walk whenever I was angry or go to my car to cry.

   She was unreliable. So I was inspired to rely on myself.

   She brought another homeless man into my house and they would be together unsupervised while I worked. She had mentioned that she wanted to have sex with him. I was inspired to no longer have feelings for her.

   She accused me of rape and filed a restraining order against me. So I was inspired to move out and file for divorce.

   Cheated on me with two other men and got pregnant. Inspired me to learn she never respected our marriage.

   She made me a better person because I’m now independent. Now if only she could’ve helped me with all this trauma….
