It’s that time of year again, when I need to think about changing my phone contract. Looking online at the moment but all the deals are shit.

Is it worth going into town to peruse the stores in person, or are the deals online the only ones I’m gonna get? I don’t do this very often, as you can tell.

If all else fails I’ll just keep my current phone for another year and get a 12-mo sim only.

  1. If there’s no issue with your current phone then why are you looking to upgrade it? I’d stick with a sim-only contract like you’ve suggested as your backup plan

  2. Definitely consider going sim free. Gives you a lot more freedom. The industry has changed so that manufacturers (Samsung, Apple etc) offer the same credit deals as network providers. If you shop around, you can find a similar (or better deal) than going direct to network providers.

  3. 100% recommended going sim only. I have unlimited everything for £10 a month. Absolutely nothing wrong with the phone I just spent 18 months paying for! The world needs to break thr cycle of buying a new phone every time the contract is up.

  4. Moved to GiffGaff from Vodafone earlier this year and spend probably 50 quid less per month. Honestly if you’re not desperate for a new phone, SIM only is the way to go. And porting your number over is incredibly simple these days.

  5. If you are looking for a new handset as well you might find a better deal through an online retailer like Mobile Phones Direct. I got my last two O2 contracts through there at better rates than O2 could offer me directly. It worked out cheaper over the 2 years than buying the handset and getting a SIM only deal.

  6. The market these days for sim-only is so competitive. Have you checked out Voxi? Dirt cheap, most of the data is free so you’re unlikely to ever go over

  7. Your best bet is to call your current phone company and tell them you are leaving because you have found a better deal, they should match it.

Last time I was due an upgrade, I phoned up and they swore £60 a month was the best possible deal they could give me. I called back and said I need my PUK code because iv found a better deal elsewhere, they immediately matched the £30 deal I said I had found.
