I know my boyfriend is obsessed with Dune rn, he likes sci-fi and fantasy stuff, he likes a couple romance movies, I’m not sure what exactly though. He likes deep thinker movies and psychological thrillers I think. He’s down for comedies as long as they’re not like too much/ridiculous. And action/superhero movies. Im trying to get him into anime a bit but it’s a struggle, I’m not sure if he’s super into artsy stuff. He loved ATLA, but I showed him spirited away and he didn’t like it. (I think he might like princess mononoke or a less wacky one than spirited away)

I like fantasy stuff, and some sci Fi if it’s not too complex. I like romance movies, but I’m also picky with them too. I love anime movies like Studio Ghibli, haven’t seen enough of them though. I do like kinda violent movies, but hate horror(I think most horror movies just have TERRIBLE plots, especially the ghost/religious ones because they are funnier to me more than scary) I like some comedies. I’m like not picky at all but so picky in the sense that it takes me hours to find a movie Im in the mood for. We do have somewhat similar tastes in moves and TV, I just have yet to get into marvel and I haven’t really watched star wars in a decade. I like movies that give me some nostalgia too

Here’s a list I’ve already made of stuff I want to watch with him that I’ve either already seen or that I think we’d both like (but I really want more suggestions, and if you could tell me generally why you like it so I can get a little interest):

Grease
When Harry met Sally
West side story
The notebook
Silver linings playbook
A star is born
Broke back mountain
Pretty woman
Call me by your name
Me before you
Crazy rich Asians
Meet the parents
A Knight’s tale
500 days of summer
Alita battle angel
Dune
Nope
Her
The iron giant
Princess mononoke
Django

  1. Check out Interstellar, Sunshine, Ex Machina, Elysium, Chappie, District 9, Ares, Lockout, Pitch Black, Riddick … There’s tons of cool sci-fi movies out there.

Most of them include some aspects to think about, some social issues that seem rather dystopian. Where does life start, who deserves what in society, how to stop humanity from being destroyed…

And others like Pitch Black, Riddick and Lockout are nice action movies and less to think about.

From those you wrote, Nope and Dune are cool too.

  2. I will tell you what works for us as we watch a lot of movies together.

We don’t try to find movies that always fits both of our tastes… its too exhausting. A healthy amount of the time we take turns picking the movie. Even though, some movies are far out of my taste, we get into it for the sake of our partner. After all, its about enjoying the time together that makes the movie worth while.

But I will list off some movies:

    * Coherence – phycological ride. Astronomical anomaly causing strange events for friends at a dinner party.
    * Split – more of a thriller than a horror. Guy has like 20 personalities living in him, really love his acting and how he switches between characters on the spot
    * Free guy – Fun comedy. Main character is an NPC in a game and he tries to make all the other NPCs live a free life.
    * Ex Machina – Sci-fi. A guy wins a contest to test an AI robots personality to see if it could pass as human. One of my all-time favs. Deep thinking in it.
    * Passengers – Somewhat romance+sci-fi. A ship is deep space travelling and passengers are ‘sleeping’… dude wakes up by accident… wakes up another passenger to keep him company. (Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence)
    * Still Alice – Tear jerker. Woman develops alzheimer and her struggles
    * Limitless – One of my favs too (Bradley Cooper), comes across a drug that unlocks all parts of the mind (know how they say we only use 10% of brain, drug gives 100%). Basically becomes a genius, and off the drug crashes hard then gets addicted to it.
    * Lawless – Good one too.
    * 1917 – another massive fav. WW1 setting, movie is done where its like ‘one take’
    * Gangs of new york.
    * Mollys game – poker themed, woman hosts a poker game and gets into legal trouble, based on true story
    * School of good and evil – honestly might look cheesy at face value, but if you pay attention there is a stupid insane amount of symbolism in it, from the scenes to dialog that you could apply to modern day. Quite blown away with that aspect of the writing.
    * Fault in our stars – romance
    * Five feet apart – romance
