I’ve seen in the news when people knit some hats for newborn babies or cursive outfits for animal shelters etc and looking for something similar, but it’s so hard to find online. I’m looking for an arts and crafts hobby, that would help me fill my evenings at home but would be beneficial to the society too. Anyone got any recommendations for charities or social causes in the UK that need some support?

  1. Ask your local hospital/hospice about things they could use. Care homes are a good shout as well.

  2. Anything you make that anyone might want to buy, you could sell for any good cause, or donate to them to sell.

Soaps, candles, greetings cards with calligraphy, anything.

If you have a local haberdashery, see if they run classes because while it’s not charity it is helping put money back into the local economy while you’re learning a new skill

Being able to repair clothes is really handy and a skill many don’t have so repairing school uniforms could really help some families that would struggle to afford a new pair of school trousers or w/e

Ask the local carehome/scout group if they need any volunteers in the evenings and specify you like crafts.

  4. I have a friend who knits “twiddle sleeves” for people with dementia. They go over the arm covering up a cannula (so it’s not visible, less distressing for the patient and less likely they touch it) and they’re in bright colours with buttons and other things to keep hands busy. She donated them through a local charity.

  5. The hospital my daughter was born at accepted handmade baby hats for the newborns. Apparently it was quite popular for the locals to knit or crochet loads of baby hats and donate them. I still have the beautiful little hat we brought her home in.

  6. There’s tons of different things you can knit for charity.

In addition to those already mentioned, Marie Curie hospice asks for socks every year so every patient has a pair for Christmas.

Battersea Dogs Home always wants knitted mice for the cats.

You can also knit small blankets for the dogs and cats in RSPCA centres.

  7. Knitfornowt is one I used to knit for. They also take crochet and sewn items. They have tons of patterns for “worry monsters” which are used by therapists working with children. If a child has been a victim of abuse, for example, they find it easier to tell a puppet. They also used hand puppets. They have a long waiting list of therapists because demand is so high, so do have a look.

I just checked their webpage and they need people who can sew at the moment. https://www.knitfornowt.org/
