The same way I comfort a woman in the same situation.

The same way I comfort anyone..by listening to them, understanding the depth of their problems, showing sympathy and helping them out. Show that things will be okay and that they aren’t alone.

Same way you comfort anyone. Talk and listen.
Depends on the context and situation rather than their gender
Make sure they know that they are cared for (loved) and appreciated. All comments regarding listening and not alone are absolutely correct as well.
LIST OF DON’Ts: (aka wait for him to get the idea/ask you to:)
-offer to fix it
-brainstorm solutions
-distract him
-interrupt
-compare problems
-tell him you know what he is going through
-explain why his problems are his fault (even if they are. It won’t help)
-minimize his feelings
DO:
-listen attentively
-offer food
-ask what he thinks might help
-stay calm and relatively quiet/relaxed even when he is getting worked up
-use a slightly lower pitched voice
….you know what? In retrospect you kinda just treat ‘em like a wild animal with a broken leg. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
