Good afternoon my fellow Americans and fellow southern Great Plainspeople. I’m a DFW native, and have resided in Texas all my life. That will change come January once I move to start my new job up in Lawton, Oklahoma. I am aware of where “Texarkana” is and I’ve been through there a few times, but now I wonder. Is “Texoma” acknowledged as a subregion in the same way like Texarkana is? Where does Texoma begin, and where does it end? Will I become a “Texoman” once I’m established in the area?

  2. I also live in DFW and formerly lived in OK. To me, Texoma is the lake and it’s immediate vicinity. I know people who live in cities and towns in the Red River area who would never consider that area “Texoma.”

  3. Texoma to me is the region surrounding Ardmore and Durant on the Oklahoma side and Sherman/Dennison and Gainesville on the Texas side. They have their own TV stations separate from OKC & DFW and the economy of the region is linked together

  4. The only time I use “Texoma” is in reference to Lake Texoma, like how Texarakana is in reference to the city of Texarkana. I have familiy that lives in Grayson County, TX right along the Red River and they’ve never referenced the general area as Texoma

  5. The only place you hear “Texoma” is in the immediate vicinity of the lake. A regional business serving Durant, Denison-Sherman, and Gainesville would more likely call itself “Red River” rather than “Texoma.” As in “visit your Red River Toyota dealer.”

You’ll hear “Ark-La-Tex” for the region that includes Texarkana, extending from Idabel to Natchitoches, from Hope to Mount Pleasant or Carthage. Basically the area served by the Shreveport television stations, one of which was cross-licensed to Texarkana.

  6. Texoma is the lake. Not a whole region. Lawton is certainly its own thing. Check out the wildlife refuge there. Great hiking and birding. Red River area is something I’ve heard but only for towns actually on the river.
