As a meme geek, what is the craze behind ‘Ohio’?

1. Good question and I have no idea! I’m from Ohio and I started seeing memes about it randomly. I’m curious too how it started because it doesn’t seem more strange to me than anywhere else!

2. It’s, quite possibly, the most average state in the country. It’s on the border between the midwest and the east coast, so not only is it not too geared towards either region, it also doesn’t really have any sort of “east coast vs west coast” culture. It’s got a pretty average mix of urban, suburban, and rural populations, so it doesn’t stick out for being a big ol’ rural area or particularly metropolitan, but it’s important to note that that mix is maintained by multiple, mid-sized cities, rather than that singular, very notorious city. So, due to the internet’s love of irony, people thought it would be funny to take an extremely milquetoast state and make it the bane of the rest of the world’s existence. Which, let’s face it, is pretty funny.

3. Not sure tbh. I used to go to Ohio every summer for a week to visit relatives and I quite enjoyed it. It’s super flat…..at least where I stayed. Georgia is very hilly and mountains everywhere so it was a nice change

4. It came from TikTok. If you’re trying to look for a logical reason as to why people started talking about Ohio in particular then you’re wasting your time. people just thought it’d be funny to make memes about Ohio and then it grew.

5. I have no idea. Probably just the stereotype of Ohio being the most average, boring, white bread state in the Union.

6. As a Michigan resident, Ohio has always been the worst place on earth to live and I’m glad the entire world has finally come to recognize that state for what it is.

7. This isn’t fact but:

   It’s an undercover large state (7th in the nation) and the Ohio memes are the epitome of the Midwest.

   “Ohio” is shorthand for Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska.. etc

   ..because Ohio on its own isn’t a standout state in the way Florida memes are.. It’s just a kingpin or average representation for a lot of The Middle

8. A couple years ago they ranked #1 in terrorism in the United States

   They lost 45-23

   They had a courpted politician on their side, and that’s how they kept the toldeo strip. Even though we rightfully took it

   When you pass through it, a field of dread encapsulates you and everything around you

9. I always thought Ohio was lovely. My relatives on both sides are from Granville, so I used to go there often as a kid. But maybe Granville isn’t typical Ohio. In my experience, it’s West Virginia that sucks.
