Good morning!

My partner (23F) and I (22M) just went to take a look at a house for rent with three rooms. One is taken by the son (Tom’s let’s say) of the land lord, the other two are available.

I asked my contact Tom- because my partner and I are wanting to take a room to share, would the bills would then be split four ways (us 2 + the son + other roommate)? Tom said that we could actually still split bills per room- so my partner and I would pay 1/3 together. While this would be great, I could see the solo roommate feeling on the short end of the stick. Tom is also planning on bringing his girlfriend in on the same deal in several months, so this would accentuate this effect more.

Should I bring this up to Tom? Should I say that I think it’s a bad idea to split per room and we should split per-person? Even if the solo roommate says they don’t mind? I would assume so because they could get fed up with it down the line.

Thanks and have a wonderful morning!

P.s. if this is the wrong sub would you point me in the right direction and I’ll move the post? Thanks!

  1. I lived in a sheared home w a partner. The couple with the master paid $600 while the other 2 rooms woth shared bathrooms were $350 regardless of if a couple was in it or a single person. (Giving numbers for proportions.) My friend does it split up per person, 2 couples and one single in the house all paying the same amount. I think either is an acceptable way to split it.
