I often see that people get the advice to “just be yourself”. I know this advice is given with good intentions but these people want to change. Sometimes unadjusted behaviour is working against you.

Personally I try to be the opposite, learn socially behaviour (extravert, smile) and put on your poker face.

  1. We all bring different versions of ourselves to different situations.

In that respect, the “be yourself” advice isn’t all that helpful!

    You could ask, “WHICH self?”

  2. So much advice around socializing feels very tone deaf and missing the point, that’s what happens when people who never really struggled try to give advice. Like most people have tried being themselves, and they’ve found out quite well that it doesn’t work at all.

  3. It is!

You should always speak your mind. If you always cause drama and problems than you have issus.

I lived 6 month in hostels. I slept with 10+ in small room.

You cant avoid conflicts at all but you learn quickly that causing stupid drama will only make it worse.

So most people dont have good problem management.

  4. Very true. It leaves you without an solution/direction, it’s just feel good words.. I’m a naturally nice guy so when I got told to be myself I was constantly having bad luck in dating. The second I heard women love jerks my life NO joke changed.
