Hi guys! I’m (27F) am getting married soon and other than obtaining a license (obvi) what advice would you give regarding name change, taxes, etc. Did you consult anyone about your taxes before hand and how they might change? Any advice about name change and how to make that more simple? I guess any advice or experience on that kind of stuff would be greatly appreciated! Feeling slightly overwhelmed 😂🥲

  1. If you get married between now and Dec 31 your going to file taxes either “married filed jointly” or “married filed separately” when the 2022 taxes are due in April 2023. If you get married in 2023 in the months before (Jan-Apl) the 2022 taxes are due, you will file separately like you have normally been doing. For the name change, you just go to your local social security office with the marriage license and change it. Once you get your new social security card with the new name, you will start the long process of going through all your accounts and change your name.

  2. I’m in the process of changing my name after getting married last month, and the steps vary by location, but googling “name change after marriage [your state]” will probably give you very thorough results. I found a list of steps on The Knot, I think?

r/weddingplanning and r/weddings might have more advice!
