Have you watched any Indian film? What’s your take on them?

  1. I watched akbar on Netflix. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The music was great and had me on my toes.

  2. I’ve never watched one in its entirety. The big song and dance scenes aren’t what I’m looking for in my entertainment.

  3. I watched Bahubali (I think that’s how it’s spelled). It was a good movie, and the battle scene was amazingly done.

  4. I’ve seen many Indian films. I liked many and disliked others. My husband is Indian and I started watching them when we got together.

  5. A few. Just as good as any other film from any other country. Nothing in particular to Indian movies outside of the cultural differences.

  6. I really liked Monsoon Wedding. (I think it counts as Indian, even though companies frim several countries were involved in production).

  7. I really liked *3 Idiots* and *Dangal*. Both were great movies. Also seen a couple of other Indian movies, and didn’t really care for them, although the songs were catchy.

  8. I’ve only seen snippets of Bollywood type movies. I don’t enjoy the singing, dancing and over the top production.

  9. For some reason, I watched Dhoom when I was younger.

In general, I associate Indian movies with Bollywood, even though I know that there are other film industries in India that produce languages in the local language. Lots of musical dance numbers as well.

  10. Life of Pi count?

My GF is Indian. Most of the Indian movies I have seen are too cheesy and lack emotional depth. It’s like watching the Hallmark Channel with a bouncy soundtrack.

  11. I’ve seen clips, I’m not a huge movie buff but they don’t seem like the sort of flick I’m interested in. Very over the top.

  12. I’ve seen Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Lagaan a few times, for some reason Doom 2 two or three times but never the other films in the series, and I just watched Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan a couple days ago. There are probably a few I’ve forgotten. I’ve been meaning to watch more because I have enjoyed everything I’ve seen, but it feels daunting to just start picking films at random.

I think Bollywood (and other Indian) films can come off as a little over the top to westerners, and that takes you out of the movie unless you just get into that vibe and go with it. We’re also not used to musical numbers in films that aren’t expressly musicals, but I like that aspect too.

  13. Sometimes Bollywood action movies will become part of meme culture, typically for being over the top cheesy

I’ve always thought of them as high budget B rated movies

  14. Yeah, a bunch.

My favorite and a great movie is The Warrior with the late Irrfan Kahn. Excellent movie.

    Singham was fun.

  15. I watched *Saawariya* (which is as Bollywood as *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon* is a Wuxia film), and *Om Shanti Om* (because of its metastory as a Bollywood film about making Bollywood films, and of course Deepika Padukone). They’re fine, definitely a different, perhaps acquired taste. Some songs are spectacular. These are romances rather than action movies so there’s none of the craptacular scenes like what we see on Reddit from time to time. *Om Shanti Om,* for reasons, is basically not one but two movies and is unfortunately as long, but *Saawariya* is a nice “gateway drug” movie for those who might like to dip their toes in the genre (it’s based on the Dostoevsky story “White Nights,” so it’s got Indian and Western sensibilities, with a splash of *Moulin Rouge* styling), and would be recommended by myself to anyone who wants to try Bollywood. What throws me off is that the actors are almost never the actual singers, and that multiple singers might even sing for the same actor, but that’s something that can be overlooked.

  16. Oh yeah my family watches them extensively. We aren’t Indian but the Bollywood industry was kind of like very enthralling and exciting for my parents when they were children given that they lived in Asian countries. And they had lots of exposure to it. I also ended up watching lots of Bollywood movies in my childhood. I can be very critical of them cause I’ve seen so many. The big romantic saga-types I don’t have a problem with, in fact I always cry during those. I tend to enjoy action or thriller ones as well. I typically dislike the comedy movies as well as most of the “social justice” ones that keep popping up, the execution of the plot just isn’t my favorite.

  17. I watched Slumdog Millionaire and it was good.

Other than that, I’ve seen bits and pieces, but nothing that I watched enough of to remember.

  18. Depends on movie, I personally relate more with Hollywood movies. I like some like Bahubali, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, 3 idiots, Dangal, Tare Zameen Par and so on (oh and Iqbal, love the soundtrack). Basically if the movie is good I will watch it, I’m indifferent as to where it’s from.

  19. Dangal is a solid movie. Seen a couple others that didn’t really leave much of an impression on me, positive or negative.

  20. I watched one about an Indian gangster. Had a few twists I wasn’t expecting. Action wasn’t over the top because it wasn’t Bollywood. The subtitles go really fast because they speak so fast but overall I thought it was a very good movie.

  21. I remember enjoying Monsoon Wedding which was a bit of a hit here. We have a substantial Indian population in my area and our biggest movie theater often has Indian films but I’ve never gone to one…

  22. I liked Bahubali on Netflix. I thought it was wonderful. Gorgeous visuals and music, suuuuper cheesy, but taking itself the right amount of serious.

It also helped that I had THC gummies the whole 5 hours worth of run time

  23. Satya was pretty good.

More films like that, even if they feature song and dance moments, would be great.

  24. Yeah, my family is from that region of the world, theres a lot of good Indian movies. Indian movies aren’t all cheesy Bollywood action flicks

  25. As you can tell by the answers so far, I think most Americans associate Indian movies with over the top Bollywood musicals. Do they represent the majority of your films? I’ve seen The Disciple and White Tiger and enjoyed both.

  26. Jodhaa Akbar was very pretty, but so, so long.

Guzzaarish was a wonderful film that had me in tears the whole way through.

Bride and Prejudice is the superior Pride and Prejudice adaptation.

And yes, I watched all three simply because of how hot Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai are.

  27. I’ve seen clips of many but I’ve only watched one Eega. I liked it. It is brazenly self aware of how nat shit insane it is and it really adds to the experience.

It is the definition of, “why the fuck not” when it comes to film.

  28. Bollywood action flicks are ridiculous and amazing for it

I can’t name any but I like what I’ve seen
