Little backstory. We moved to our current home in June this year. The house was recently renovated, so everything was pretty new.

Our room is directly under the roof, which cut diagonally half of the room.

The problem started at the end of August, rain caused leak in the wall leaving stains over time. The problem was reported to the landlord multiple times but only in mid November was definitely solved.

Now, I noticed some black stain on the diagonal wall, that could be because builders previously used the roof window to check the roof and left stains.

But I’m not an expert on what constitutes mould and given the 3 months of leaking and staining some part of the wall, the suspicions are legitimates.

Also I suffer of severe asthma, therefore establish the safety of this room is essential for me and my family.

The landlord is not answering anymore. I’m not sure what to do.

  1. Usually black dots appearing in damp places – on walls, around windows, in between bathroom tiles, even on fabrics like curtains.

  2. Black dots and general blackness on wallpaper is a good indication of mould. Get a good quality humidifier to keep it at bay for now and continue to try make contact with the landlord.
Our house has mould too, but it does grow and can be wipes away fairly easily rith a bit of beech – and these walls are north facing and cold when you touch so kind of makes sense, plus it’s an old house 😬

  3. Everyone has mould in their house. The question is whether you have it in large enough quantities to be visible. The answer is; you know if you can see it. It’ll be black spots, not a single uniform patch of colour.

I have a similar diagonal ceiling and condensation builds up on it in winter if the heating is on.

  4. I found fuzziness and grey spots/rings on the back of a sofa and the wallpaper behind it even though it’s about four or so inches away from the wall. There was also black in front of the window alcove.
Cleaned with white vinegar after shop bought stuff didn’t stop it reoccurring and so far the vinegars held it off coming back.
