There are some local Slavic demons that my parents would use, like a Wila, Mara/Zmora, Rusałka or Strzyga, but they honestly didn’t scare me with monsters too often.
The thing that absolutely terrified and traumatised me, however, came from Finland. In Polish, we called it “Buka”. In English it’s “the Groke”.

Many European countries celebrate St Nicholas Day on the 6th of December. In the Netherlands and Belgium we call the figure of Saint Nicholas “Sinterklaas”. The lyrics of traditional Sinterklaas songs, still sung today, warn that Sinterklaas and his assistant will leave well-behaved children presents but punish those who have been naughty. They might even take very poorly behaved children to their homeland of Spain in burlap sacks where, according to legend, they’ll be forced to assist them in their workshop for an entire season or longer. Having your parents tell you that a stranger might take you away to a foreign country is quite frightening for a six year old.
