In the old days, it was pretty much assumed that if a man was unfaithful, it was because he couldn’t keep his pants on. Women tell me there are three stages of an affair: 1) the beginning when everything is exciting; 2) the middle where things get complicated; and 3) the end when it all falls apart. I call these three phases infatuation , obsession , and disillusionment. Most affairs never go beyond phase one or two because few couples can weather the complications introduced by an ongoing affair into their relationship long enough to reach stagethree , which is what most people think of as “true love. If they feel they have lost your love, they will try even harder to win you back. But if they feel neglected or unappreciated in your marriage, or if they believe there is someone out there who will give them what you aren’t giving them, then chances are good that they will be tempted by another woman who comes along — especially if she sends clear signals of interest their way!
