Has anyone noticed when you go shopping the sales assistants don’t talk anymore?

I’ve not spoken to anyone in two years so I thought I’d try going to the shops for the basic level of pleasantries. I’ve either been shouted at “self checkout is over there” and met with annoyance when I’ve said I’ve wanted to use the normal checkout, the last two times, different assistants have been on a phone call. I get less interaction from the shops than a delivery that shouts through the door.

I know it’s not a personal thing and the method isn’t foolproof or else I’d be normal after doing this ten years ago, but I have no idea what the equivalent is anymore?
