In what ways do video sharing platforms like Tiktok affect your self image?

  1. They don’t. I only use tiktok for entertainment purposes (stand up, sheep shearing, sticom clips, etc).

  2. They don’t. I don’t watch videos on them at all, really. Unless something particularly interesting gets linked here.

  3. They do for me. It’s known the algorithm pushes attractive people, most of the time in a wealthier/cleaner environment. That isn’t necessarily the issue, it’s just every scroll feels like insanely pretty people that I’m not sure our brain was designed to see so much of in every other scroll. Also, the face altering filters that seem almost seem standard now when watching videos. Along with the photoshopping and face tuning people have been doing for years, I often feel like everyone is perfect, when in reality they aren’t. Lastly, the constant skincare, anti aging, and diet advice. Every scroll feels like it’s telling me I’m not pretty enough. Sometimes when I fall asleep I get nervous about staying on one side too long as too not make my face ‘crooked’ because tik tok says that can happen. I’ve only been on this app for about 6 months now.

  4. It doesn’t. Maybe if I was in my early 20’s or teens. But I’m 30 so I’m on dog, comedy and movie tiktok. I rarely get recommended anything from beauty or dance influencers.

  5. Besides getting on my last nerve, they don’t. I sometimes grin and bear it when my niece shows me something she thinks it’s funny.

  6. Where is the “social” part of these apps now a days? I don’t have tiktok. I stopped using Instagram awhile ago, it’s impossible to see my actual friends in real life posts, so dumb.

  7. I don’t use TikTok, but I had to unfollow a bunch of fashion accounts on Instagram because I realised those videos and photos were triggering my ED.
