Hello, so this happened about A month ago. I visited NYC from NJ. Went to visit a sight and make sure I parked correctly. So the streets there were no signs and a lot of cars were parked where I was parked. Upon coming back I come to a $115 parking ticket. Fucking ny tickets never gotten one. I contested it, showed proof but they said it’s invalid, I still gotta pay the fine. My question is, do I really have to pay the parking ticket while I live in NJ??? Would it affect me if I renew my license in nj?

  1. I’m sure there are some OG New Jerseites who would tell you you don’t owe shit to New York

  2. So, I didn’t look up laws for NYC, just in general: if you don’t pay, you could end up in collections, which can hurt your credit score. If you get more tickets, you could end up with a boot on your car or your car can get impounded. They can also keep you from registering your car until you’ve paid the ticket. You could also end up with fines much higher than your ticket. Since fighting it didn’t work, it’s probably not worth it not to pay.

  3. I had something similar happen to me passing through Ohio a few years ago. I told the state to kiss my ass and forgot about it. That worked for a few years until the bench warrant caught up with me. Man, what a hassle that was.

It may take years to catch up with you, but NY won’t forget and NJ won’t care.

  4. one time I forgot about a parking ticket & my plates got suspended. thankfully I was able to pay and get it undone immediately, but it’s much better to never be in that situation. pay the ticket, save yourself the headache.

  5. If you plan on driving in NY again, I’d say you probably should. ‘Cause, you know, an unpaid ticket is a crime, and that gets attached to your license plate, so a bored cop looking for a way to entertain themselves might cross your path.

  6. Yeah, you need to pay. My grandpa got ticketed while visiting DC some years back. He’d have been breaking the law if he didn’t pay.

  7. Yup. If you have to go back to NY for any reason and you are pulled over for any reason it will be on record and now you got a bench warrant for your arrest.

  8. Yes. Failure to pay a ticket will eventually lead to more fines, that can end up culminating in jail time if you’re that determined not to pay, though that usually only happens to crazy sovereign-citizen types or idiots who act as their own attorneys.
