Sometimes I sit there scrolling the internet and wonder how the hell people generate so many things to say. Obviously with the internet, you can be very particular about what you post and think things through, etc. but I’m talking about even things like hour-long podcasts.

Stick me in a one-on-one conversation with someone, even a close friend, and things will inevitably (and quickly) dry up, become silent and awkward.

Aside from not being able to spontaneously say things, it takes me ages to formulate coherent sentences (first language is English). It’s like I can’t even express myself properly because it takes me too long to retrieve the words. (With writing it’s a different story because I have those extra few seconds to think things through.)

Anyone else get this? It seems like a combination of (1) getting nervous in the moment, so it’s harder to think of what to say; and (2) filtering myself, so that I assume what I have to say isn’t interesting or witty enough

  1. Ask questions. People love to talk about themselves. Ask about their hobbies or interest and take a genuine interest in what they have to say.
