I try smiling at ppl in the hallway and stuff and I’ve been told by my family that it looks really fake, awkward, and even a bit passive aggressive. I appreciate that they’re being honest with me lol, but idk what I’m doing wrong. I feel like a jerk if I don’t smile at ppl when a. They randomly make eye contact with me or b. Ik them, but idk them well enough to say hi

Plz help bc I’ve always assumed smiling at ppl was the polite thing to do and now I feel like I’ve gotten it all wrong.

  1. Do _you_ feel it on the inside as if you want to _genuinely_ smile? Or do you feel as if it’s required of you

Ex., I _enjoy_ smiling back on coworkers at work (sometimes even strangers on the street) because seeing them smile automatically triggers a reaction in me to smile back – it’s not something I get to control. I also interpret the smile as a silent greeting.
