what’s the weirdest country you’ve been to and what was weird about it?

  1. The US.

Maybe I just didn’t look in the right place, but how the fuck is a single person meant to live there? All groceries are sold in ridiculous amounts (milk is sold in fucking canisters? One pack of ham is basically a whole cow?). I had to throw away tons of stuff because it all went bad.

  2. Definitively not the weirdest country, but definitively the weirdest food I’ve ever seen was in Chile.

This was served in one meal:

    Boiled potatoes… with mayonnaise

    Boiled corn… with mayonnaise

    Chorizo… with mayonnaise

    Diced tomatoes… with mayonnaise

    Hot dogs… with mayonnaise

And I swear to y’all I saw several people put mayonnaise on a steak.

It wasn’t weird, it was kinda surreal. I got nothing against Mayo per se, but see it in almost every single serving was too much.

  3. Sweden…all men were gay /s

Seriously though. Belgium was weird. Beer is served in small glasses and 3 beers in you have the feeling you barely remember who you are, where you live and how you got there. Oh…and everywhere is just fries and mayonnaise…

  4. Ohhhh, this is a fun question! Mine was Bahrain. Never felt comfortable, even though nothing bad happened.

I was a very young sailor and the first thing that happened when I got off the ship was a call to prayer. I had NO IDEA whether I was supposed to go about things as normal or stand still until the chanting was over. I chose option B. Still not sure if that’s right or wrong, but it’s what I thought would be most respectful in the moment.

In the main city, I was shown flags by the different factions and told that if “a” flag was up it meant a certain thing and if “b” flag was up, it meant another.

I have many other reasons why I felt weird while I was there, but that’s the only country (out of 15) where I’ve truly felt like an outsider.

Israel takes #2 spot, although there’s a wide gap there.

  5. Japan probably qualifies by default.

Weird, but…”good weird”. From a love hotel room that made me feel like fucking in a greek temple to having seemingly not a single public trashcan, but not a single piece of litter on the ground as well.

  6. Russia (don’t know the english name of the region, but just southwest of st. Petersburg). Not necessarily weird, just interesting experiencing the kindness and hospitality of the locals, despite how poor and run down the whole region is.

Also, Israel. Also not necessarily weird, but vastly different compared to the little European country where I grew up. Lots of men and women in military gear running drills or just casually walking around with assault rifles slung over their shoulder. I think I even saw a guy with a 40mm (?) Underbarrel grenade launcher attached to his rifle. Iirc, Israel has conscription for both men and women, and we were told that soldiers carry their weapons with them everywhere during their service.

Idk, I may be a bit sheltered, but Russia and Israel are the most interesting countries I have visited.

  7. For me, USA.

    Cars, cars everywhere, nobody walking.
    Enormous food portions.
    Tipping.
    Continuous smiling…

  8. Myanmar. They drive on the right of the road in right hand drive cars, so the driver is next to the kerb. The doors on the buses open away from the roadside!

  9. Cambodia – I was there 3 days and felt “off” and I realized by Day 2 it is because there are no elderly people. They were all murdered by Pol Pot in the 80s.
