My wife and I are US citizens and are looking to move to England.

I work as a town planner, she works as a journalist. We’ve done the research to understand the need for a Skilled Worker Visa. I see that both our professions are eligible occupations for the Skilled Worker Visa and that several city councils are on the Register of Licensed Sponsors list.

I’m not entirely sure though if I could work for a local government in the UK, given that I’m not a UK citizen. I haven’t found clear answers about this on gov.uk. I also reached out to the Royal Town Planning Institute, who couldn’t say for certain that it’s legal for a non-UK citizen to work for a local council.

Thought I would ask here since some may have worked for a local council and come across this issue. Thank you!

  1. If your post is about getting a visa (for the UK), about visas, citizenship, or residency in the UK – please visit /r/UKVisa, /r/IWantOut or speak to [a registered Immigration Advisor](https://www.gov.uk/find-an-immigration-adviser)

  2. I work for a council and have several colleagues from the states. I think we actually have some planning jobs going if you want to message me and I’ll let you know which council.

But in all seriousness, local government planning is stressful and badly paid. Our turnover is insane. If it was me I’d plan to do it for a year, 18 months, learn the ropes and the systems and then run like hell to consultancy work.

Oh, and planning agency workers at the moment earn about twice as much as permanent staff.

  3. Lol it’s planning applications for NIMBYS Not watching suspected terrorised or controlling where the royal family go. You don’t need any form of security clearance to work for a LA but I couldn’t imagine anything worse. They all look depressed and fuck going by councillors faces. Good luck though.

  4. You should be fine.

As far as I understand its just the civil service for which you need to be British or a bunch of of other complicated nationality requirements
