GF and I would like to get the formalities over with in a fun cool way and have a party with less pressure later on. We have discussed a Vegas wedding with an Elvis impersonator or at Niagara falls on a boat.

  1. So so so smart to elope. Good on you! We could have put a down payment on a house for the price of our wedding…

I’d say Vegas or someplace tropical. Caribbean, Mexico, etc.

    Congrats!

  2. Consider renting a fun Airbnb in a remote location. Get a beautiful place in the mountains or forest if that is something you both like. A national park, perhaps. You can spend a few days hiking, swimming, exploring, sightseeing, and will have plenty of opportunities to have soulful, important conversations about your future together. You will be able to make vows in front of monuments to the timeless beauty of the Earth itself and see your bond reflected in ancient, natural things for the rest of your life.

  3. You can get anyone you know ordained to do the ceremony for like $20, (I personally am a Dudeist Priest – dudeism has a subreddit) or you can find an officiant with google.

    * I think the Grand Canyon is cool.
    * the cliffs on Lake Superior are dramatic AF
    * sea stacks on the Oregon or Washington coast make a nice backdrop

  4. Something/where that means something to the two of you. Can be the MacD’s where you had your first date if you really wanted.

  5. If you want to dispense with the wedding formalities but just have something easy (if that’s why you’re eloping), you can do that in Vegas and still have a nice wedding. It’s what we did. We did it at one of the fancy hotels and they had a whole department where we spent 15 minutes saying “we’d like this, that, and this other thing,” and then we all showed up (about 30 of us) at the appointed date and time and they did the whole thing. It was great. The wedding was. The marriage sucked, but that’s a different reddit entry.

  6. >at Niagara falls on a boat.

As someone local to the Falls… don’t. Those tours are super cool as an activity, but would be terrible for an actual ceremony, even a short one. It’s windy as shit and the boat pitches a ton once you get close to the Falls. They are beautiful though, so maybe at the park on one side or the other (Canada has the better view, US is better as a park) and then the boat immediately after? Otherwise you’re risking literally losing your balance during your vows and falling on the deck.

My wife and I eloped and got married at a park on Lake Champlain with the Adirondacks behind us. Elvis honestly isn’t a bad choice even if it’s not my taste. You want to be able to savor the moment, so make sure that’s something you’re considering.
