A trend was developed in Cyprus in the last couple of electoral cycles where candidates for local offices seek and then campaign around endorsements they receive from other, mainly EU-, countries. These are usually politicians from the corresponding Europarties or counterparts from their current positions (e.g. other Min FAs if a former Min FA is running for President).

It was [first done by President Anastasiadis and EPP](https://www.dw.com/el/%CF%83%CF%84%CE%AE%CF%81%CE%B9%CE%BE%CE%B7-%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%85-%CE%BD-%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B1%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B1%CF%83%CE%B9%CE%AC%CE%B4%CE%B7-%CE%B1%CF%80%CF%8C-%CF%84%CE%BF-%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%BA/a-16510421) and initially it was very controversial because if a foreign leader (e.g. Merkel back then) throws her weight behind a specific candidate, there’s a sense that should that candidate lose, relations with e.g. Germany will sour. It was described by opposition and some neutral third parties as unnecessary foreign intervention in a domestic political process.

Since then, it has become a standard part of election campaigns and it looks like all political forces adopted it.

Question inspired by most recent headline: https://youtu.be/CJ3Ecc0DGn8 (endorsements for presidential candidate Christodoulidis, former Min FA, but various other present and former Min FAs from e.g. Bulgaria, Italy, Malta, Luxembourg but also Armenia, Albania, Lebanon and other countries of the broader region).

EDIT: Fixed some minor wording issues and added link for news coverage of the first instance of this tradition.

  1. Not at all here in Denmark. Candidates don’t really do endorsements at all, the closest thing is when we have local elections, the MPs will show up a few times to support their local candidates (there’s never just 1 from each party).

  2. In Ukraine in 2004 Putin publicly supported one of candidate (it was Yanukovich, the same guy we kicked in 2013). Back then Putin was relatively popular here and his support meant something for meaningful number of people 🙂

Though his candidate lost and it strained relations for the first time. After that such situations haven’t been repeated as far as I know.
