Hello everyone,

I’m Konstantin, my lovely wife and I are happily married for 9 years already.

Because of my software background, I tend to notice issues everywhere as well as in current marriage system. For example, if you get married in one country and want to relocate to another, you have to get your marriage certificate apostilled which is normally slow. Couples take big loans to get married. Same-sex marriages are not allowed in many places. And so on and so forth.

I build landing pages, corporate sites, e-commerce stores, etc. at work but it feels insignificant compared to the potential contribution to the humanity which can be done if I find a solution for totally online marriages. On “totally” I mean internationally, quickly and as cheap as Netflix or something like that. So a few months ago I started to work on such an application.

The problem is that I’m alone with my idea. My pears don’t believe in it, so I thought about giving up on it a few times. My wife supports me but I think it’s because she loves me.

I’m here to ask you if I’m just crazy and it’s not possible at all or such idea has a chance and I should proceed?

  1. With the rise in broken families and divorce, why would anyone want to make getting married EASIER?

  2. Sorry, but your idea is not going to work, at least in the foreseeable future. It would basically be similar to an online diploma mill: get a marriage certificate online that is then zero use for visas, international travel, and the like.

  3. The problem you’re going to run into is, as you’ve likely found, there is no single process to get married. Every location has a different procedure. In the US, it not only varies from state to state, but from county to county. Additionally, marriages have to be certified by the local governments of where the people getting married live, so for the US, you’d have to get buy-in from all 3,143 counties or county equivalents. Many of those small, local governments still don’t have a lot of online services, even in 2022. Many more will not want to outsource the service to an online forum.

I’m not saying it’s impossible. But it’s a lot more involved than just creating a website. You’re looking to make a universal platform that bridges all government bureaucracies.
