Thank you all the Redditors with whom I have interacted and have listened to my problems and given me solutions over these last few months.

I have finally decided to start therapy after delaying it for 3 years. I booked an appointment with a young male therapist who I would be comfortable talking to like someone here suggested.

Any other things or tips I should know before my first every therapy session? Thank you again Reddit

  1. Start writing down when something triggers you: what you felt, what it was, why you think it might have triggered you.

Keep a journal (I use notes in my phone). This is for an outlet for your emotions and to get down any dreams, daydreams, thoughts, emotions that you have that might be negative that you want to understand. I’ve even got to the point where I begin analysing these myself and try to work out why I felt that and ask input from the therapist.

You can bring these up in therapy to give the therapist good material to work with. Ideally they will click with these and ask probing questions to help you and make you feel better about these things. I do this during the week and before every session I get an idea of what I want to talk about from them.

Doing this ensures you are putting in the work for your own therapy, which is a key driver for success.

Good luck and well done for taking this step.
