I feel like people assumed that the pictures I posted were with friends instead of family which made me wonder, is that a normal thing for ppl to associate New Year’s Eve with friends instead of family ? When it comes to Christmas people often assume family and it seems like for NYE they assume friends . But I thought NYE was also commonly or very much a family thing too? Have I been mistaken in this assumption lol

  1. People don’t really fly or drive out to be with relatives on NYE like they do with thanksgiving/Christmas. At least in USA, when you’re a kid, you usually do spend NYE with your family and your parents’ friends (family friends). Then when you’re older there’s a big party element— drinking, midnight kiss, etc.

NYE doesn’t have the same value attachments as thanksgiving or Christmas where societal expectations are to cook, give thanks/presents and generally spend time with family. I believe this has been the case historically as well.

Also, think about how many people have just spent a lot of time with people— relatives— they only see (and are culturally expected to see) at these holidays. Even if you adore your family, the season is stressful for most. NYE is a time to let loose with your chosen friends!

  2. Do what you want!!!

I have friends who hang out with friends, I have friends who hang out with family, I have friends who have a boardgame night and invite friends and younger family… whatever you want.
