especially when speaking my second language
Hi OP,
I understand where you are coming from here–people vary a lot in this kind of ability.
I would say two things to you. 1) I think this skill can be improved. A friend of mine was really good at this: he had a lot of “canned” lines for these kind of situations. For example, when someone shared something unfortunate or sad, he would say “File that under sad but true.” It’s short, fits pretty well, and comes off kind of witty. Basically, he had collected a lot of lines like that that he could use. Perhaps you could listen and when you hear these kinds of lines from others, file them away for future use.
2) Don’t feel bad if you are not as good at this as other people. People who are very skilled at this kind of thing come off well, but they can be overly glib, and surface-y, and it is often the quieter people who are more respected in a serious way.
