Hey guys don’t know if this is the right subreddit for this but I really like my bosses and don’t know what to do.

But I’ve been struggling with depression as long as I can remember and thought it was finally gone but 3 years ago it started coming back.

Now lately I’ve been having a really hard time getting ready for work and as such have been taking days off just because I can’t get myself out of bed or that I stress myself out so much that I end up crying and heaving and I just don’t dare to go.

I really like my boss and would like to be honest with them about this but I’m scared my boss is nearly having a burnout herself and I like some of my colleagues and just don’t know what to do :(.

This is also my first time ever having a full time contract and I don’t know if this affects any of it :(.

  1. Look into FMLA. You can get it continuous or intermittent. You can talk to your boss directly if you have a good relationship with them or go through HR. I had an intermittent one a few years ago for depression and it was a big help because those absences don’t count against you.

  2. I’ve been in a similar situation and end up telling my boss my situation. It ended up being a great thing telling them, it felt good. Being honest is key when your social/mental health affects your work life

  3. I hate mixing my personal life with my professional one. My struggles are my own and I wouldn’t want anyone at work, including my boss, to know what I’m going through.

As a manager, I’ve also had this conversation the other way around and only few people could still keep it professional afterwards. Most of the people coming to me and sharing their struggles with mental health had an implicit (or sometimes very explicit) expectations that they’re to be given a free pass at work.

On the other hand, with those few who could be responsible about it, I still appreciated it. As long as they acted within the rights and privileges of the employee, having that additional context was helpful.

I think it all depends on what you’re hoping to gain out of the conversation and what is your general approach towards work.

I hope you feel better soon and good luck with your boss!
